I’m often asked about my professional qualifications. Well, here’s the elevator speech, if you’re curious.
I am an award-winner communicator, with more than 30 years as a writer, editor and team leader in the journalism and marketing industries. By moving progressively through a variety of fields — from sports to business literacy to luxury living to travel to medical leadership — I have shown an aptitude for welcoming new professional challenges at every phase of my career, and excelling at them.
I started as a correspondent/reporter and editor at Media General (which had a local presence in The Tampa Tribune, which was converged with TBO.com and WFLA-TV) and eventually served as the primary newsroom liaison to the team building TBO.com (Tampa Bay Online). While at MG, I also served as the company’s lead content manager for numerous major international events (such as the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 Olympic Games). In 1997, my team was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize — the highest honor in journalism — for uncovering financial improprieties within the state’s governing body of high school sports.
In 2000, I moved into public relations as the director of communications for Paradigm Learning, an international corporate training company based at the time in Tampa, where I worked with the firm’s major clients to share news about innovative ways they were jointly increasing employee business literacy. My media placements were credited for $600,000 in revenue during my tenure.
In 2001, I moved to Knight Ridder Newspapers, where I was executive sports editor for the Bradenton Herald, overseeing local and national content for the newspaper, the Bradenton.com website and the national Knight Ridder news service, while developing the skills of younger and talents of veteran staff members.
In 2002, I moved to Palm Beach Media Group, a nationally renowned publisher of luxury lifestyle media products, where I helped launch Tampa Bay Illustrated, which became the dominant local magazine in its niche within 12 months of its debut. At TBI, I created an assortment of new media, including annual relocation and philanthropy guides, by working with relevant organizations and key audiences to deliver useful and profitable products. In 2005, I was promoted to PBMG’s corporate operations, to lead the custom publishing division and create media serving blue-chip hospitality destinations, such as The Breakers, The Mar-a-Lago Club, Longboat Key Club and Resort, Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, Naples Grande Beach Resort/Waldorf Astoria Naples and others. I also prospected potential other clients, including Innisbrook Resort, Biltmore and Jack Nicklaus golf communities. In that capacity, I also served on PBMG’s marketing team; among other projects, I led a campaign that improved search-engine optimization of the company’s digital content, improving Google results by 60 percent.
After that, in 2012, I became senior editor at the Florida headquarters for AAA/The Auto Club Group, where I worked with significant partner clients on financial and travel content, as well as high revenue-producing special sections for its print magazine (AAA Living), including one project that maintained $1 million in annual revenue. I also managed content on AAA’s social media channels for Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, among others.
In 2016, I was hired as managing editor of the American Association for Physician Leadership, where I published a bimonthly magazine (the Physician Leadership Journal) and a daily website (the Physician Leadership News) with content focusing on organizational leadership. I also reviewed most internal- and external-facing content for grammar, spelling and accuracy. By curating and creating a heady multimedia content mix (including podcasts) and hiring expert members for my team, we increased daily traffic to the website from low double digits to more than 10,000 visitors on a regular basis. In addition, the magazine was named a bronze award winner for best single issue nationally in 2018.
